I have already posted the clip of the famous Gar Heard shot from game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Phoenix Suns, so I won't repost (look under the 1976 archive). Here is part of CBS' intro to that game. The Celtics won this game 128-126 in triple overtime to take a 3-2 series lead, and won the series in six games. With John Havlicek as the profilee today (and no clips of his more famous steal in 1965), it was only fitting that the Zone now show one of the most famous sequences in NBA history. It comes from the end of the second overtime of game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Phoenix Suns. At the beginning of the clip, Havlicek hits what appears to be a game-winning shot, but the timekeeper didn't stop the clock soon enough (Boston had problems with these from time to time), leaving one second on the clock. Paul Westphal of Phoenix brilliantly exploits the rules and takes a timeout without having any, resulting in a technical foul and a two point defecit (but it advanced the ball to midcourt; the rule was later changed). Then Garfield Heard made the shot heard 'round the world to force a third overtime, where Boston eventually won 128-126 to take a 3-2 series lead. Game 5 is considered the greatest NBA game in history, and after watching this, you'll see why! |
